A Christmas tale in the forest

On a colorless day of heavy snowfall, Fay is given the task of helping Kris, a dying pine tree who longs to feel a bit of warmth and joy one last time.

Together with her friends, Fay wanders through the desolate, snow-covered forest, searching for anything that might lift his heart. Will she be able to find it in time?

This is a self-contained story of around 1,800 words (10 minutes read), set in the world of Fay, a world that is being developed as a seven-chapter novella.

Although not part of the main narrative, this story takes place chronologically around the midpoint of the novel. For that reason, many characters, such as Fay’s friends, appear without formal introduction. Despite the slight lack of context, it isn't required to understand and enjoy this short story.

The tone of this short story closely matches that of the full novella. Each chapter of the book is episodic, focusing on the death of a forest dweller and Fay’s efforts to grant their final wish. Through these moments, she gradually learns about life, death, friendship, choices, and herself.

I've been developing the Fay project for two years now. Progress has been slow due to personal and health-related challenges.
